Honoring Ashland’s Past—Crafting Homes for Its Future

At Asher Homes, we’re proud to call Ashland home and even prouder to help care for its historic fabric. Restoring older houses isn’t just another project for us—it’s a responsibility. We work closely with homeowners, the City of Ashland, and local design partners to preserve original character while discreetly integrating modern comfort, performance, and safety. From period-appropriate materials to careful detailing, our goal is simple: keep what makes the house itself, strengthen what time has worn, and add only what the home would have “asked for” if it could speak. That respect for craft and context has been recognized with multiple City of Ashland Historic Preservation Awards

SISKIYOU BOULEVARD COTTAGE

Recognized with the City of Ashland Historic Preservation Award in 2024, this work demonstrates how thoughtful additions can honor the past while supporting the way families live today. We added a well-scaled wing to the main house to create a right-sized kitchen and primary suite, then tied in a two-story ADU through a low-profile breezeway. The new structures mirror the home’s defining cues—turrets, massing, and period siding—so the entire composition feels cohesive from the street. Behind the walls, we upgraded comfort and performance; at the curb, the character Ashland loves remains front and center.

  • Context-sensitive addition for new kitchen + primary suite
  • Connected two-story ADU via discreet breezeway
  • Turret forms, siding profiles, and trim scaled to match original
  • Modern systems and layouts with a preservation-first exterior
  • Awarded by the City of Ashland for historic compatibility

MOUNTAIN STREET RESIDENCE

Recognized with the 2024 City of Ashland Historic Preservation Award, Mountain Street shows how thoughtful additions can respect a home’s earliest bones. We opened up and extended the rear to create a larger kitchen-living core and integrated a new garage.  Inside, we highlighted the exposed beams that define the house; behind the walls, we improved the building envelope for efficiency and comfort. From the sidewalk, the familiar porch and foundation lines anchor the home in its historic context.

Exterior restoration guided by historic cues (profiles, textures, and scale)

  • Rear expansion for larger kitchen + living room
  • Exposed beams preserved and featured
  • Building-envelope upgrades for energy efficiency
  • Original porch and foundation lines maintained

SISKIYOU #2 BOULEVARD COTTAGE

This award-winning remodel demonstrates how to modernize a home without erasing its story. Street-side, the façade remains familiar; inside, we renewed the fireplace, hearth, and mantel with period-faithful detailing. We added a primary suite and laundry and reworked the kitchen and bath, carrying forward the cottage charactor by matching roof pitch, exposed rafter tails, and scaled column wraps into the backyard. The single-bay garage became a two-car structure that feels original in massing and materials. With upgraded heating, cooling, water heating, windows, and a tightened envelope, the home now lives comfortably and efficiently while reading as authentically Siskiyou.
